The world of online dating is replete with platform options. Some are more generalized dating sites, while there are others that let you meet someone based on a specific interest or background. Some are big and some are small. And then there’s Facebook Dating.
Launched in 2019, the Facebook Dating app was touted as the next logical big step for the social media giant. But is it? Let’s explore the current popularity of the app, how it works, and how it sets itself apart from other online dating sites.
Who’s On Facebook Dating?
After a year-and-a-half, one might expect the number of users to be pretty high, given the billions of Facebook users in general. But that doesn’t appear to actually be the case.
To date, Facebook hasn’t released specific data about the app’s usage. Recent advertising campaigns appear to suggest, however, that the usage is currently rather low compared to the demographics of single people in cities they target.
That being said, those same campaigns also appear to be working. It looks like more and more people continue to join the app every day, slowly but surely.
How It Works
Facebook Dating is an integral part of Facebook in general. So, if you’re on Facebook, you can immediately access and start using Facebook Dating. The app already has information about you based on your existing profile. So, you just need to add some small refinements to your dating profile to make it complete and specific to your romantic goals.
You can add up to nine profile images. Answer questions about the type of person and relationship you’re looking for. Include some icebreaker questions for matches to respond to. Things like that.
The app then helps to match you up with other users who appear to share similar interests and/or who attend the same events. You can either mark a match with a positive “heart” symbol, or decide to pass with an “X.” From there, you can start a conversation with your match or not.
Any communication or connections you might make on Facebook Dating remain private, and separate from the main channel. And it offers helpful tools and advice specifically to help you date safely, which is nice.
Does It Work?
In short, maybe. Matching algorithms appear comparable to those you might find on any other dating site. For that, this app is theoretically designed for maximum accuracy and user success.
As with many other dating apps, Facebook Dating simply offers you a platform to meet people. Whether or not you successfully find love on it is up to you and how you decide to use it.
The Bottom Line
With relatively low usage across the country, you won’t necessarily have a large pool of matches to choose from. Nor does there seem to be anything cutting edge or overly distinctive about the app to choose it over any of the others out there.
On the other hand, the app seems easy to use. It functions much like other apps, so there is no steep learning curve. And if you’re already on Facebook, you’re already part of the way there when it comes to created your specialized dating profile.
In other words, it’s there. It’s an option, with a pool of matches that is perhaps untapped by other dating apps you might use. It can’t hurt, so why not give it a try?
