Forgiveness Day

Spread the love

June 26 is Forgiveness Day. It’s a time to forgive others … and ourselves.

Most people probably love this idea. It’s a wonderful concept. Unfortunately, the act of forgiving can be surprisingly difficult.

When we feel someone has wronged us, it is far too easy to hold a grudge. With that comes anger, resentment and bad feelings that won’t go away on their own. Letting go of these feelings tends to be a true challenge.

Some grudges go on for so long that we don’t even remember why they started. It may seem like those negative feelings have always been there. Still, we’d be much better off without them.

Benefits Of Forgiving

There are many advantages to forgiveness. Forgiving others can lead to renewed relationships that become stronger than ever. And if we can find a way to forgive ourselves, if need be, it can help us grow and advance our lives. There are also some sincere health benefits.

Holding on to anger can cause depression, stress, high blood pressure and a myriad of serious health issues. It can be extremely unhealthy to NOT forgive.

So how do you let go?

There is no easy answer. It might help to talk things through with someone you trust. Or spend time alone and think about the issue deeply. We all work through emotions in our own way. In the end, it’s up to each of us to determine how to let go of these bad feelings.

When you choose to forgive someone, you hope they will react in kind. Of course there are no guarantees. But even if the forgiveness is not reciprocated, forgiving someone who once meant a lot to you can be a powerful, positive experience.
