Want to live longer? A positive attitude may be the key.

The age-old question about whether your glass is half-full or half-empty might be more important than we thought. Some people have a natural ability to stay positive and bounce back from hard times. Turns out these people are also likely to live longer. Do you have a positive attitude?

Meet Helen Reichert

Helen Reichert has been through a lot. She’s lost loved ones, experienced more than one severe financial crisis and survived through illnesses and broken bones. Through it all, she’s held on to her positive attitude. That could be one reason why she’s still happy and spry at the impressive age of 109.

Reichert’s physician, Dr. Mark Lachs, suggests that Helen has adaptive competence. He uses this term to describe people who are able to “bounce back” after enduring life’s most difficult hardships. Helen Reichert, it seems, is a prime example of adaptive competence in action. When things are bad, Helen keeps her spirits high, remembers that things will get better and turns to her social circle for support.

Stay Optimistic

People can get beaten down by life. We suffer from loss, medical problems, financial difficulties and social dilemmas. It can be tough on us. Physically, mentally and emotionally.

Optimistic people believe things can and will improve. That may give them a stronger will to simply keep going. If we feel our lives are hopeless, it can have a negative impact on our health and overall well-being.

Never Give Up Your Quality Of Life

Another likely factor to longevity is quality of life. This goes hand-in-hand with positivity. Helen Reichert developed and maintained a high-quality life, and that’s one reason she’s still thriving today.

So how can we improve our quality of life? According to Dr. Mark Lachs, a key factor is an active social network. A group of family and friends who are always there to support you. After all, it’s the people who share your life that make it worth living.

Build Your Social Network

When things are bad, we rely on our friends and family. They are the ones who take our hands, hold us close and remind us that life will get better. Everything will be okay. We are not alone.

We need these people in our lives. People who care about us no matter what happens. They help guide us down our path. And in turn, we help guide them.

Life is about connections. The connections we share with family, friends, military buddies, classmates, colleagues and anyone else who is important to us.
