A Level 3 Sex Offender Visits An Elementary School
It’s not unusual for a parent to visit their child at school. When 32-year-old Jeffrey D. Smith entered Canandaigua Primary School, he followed the proper procedures. He signed in at the front desk and asked to see his 9-year-old daughter.
But something was wrong. This man was not the young girl’s father. The name he signed did not belong to him.
Thankfully, someone at the school noticed that something was wrong. A call was made to local police Sgt. Scott Kadien. The concerned caller reported an incident of potential sexual abuse. Kadien jumped into action.
After a thorough investigation, Sgt. Kadien learned that the man who visited Canandaigua School was not who he claimed to be. The man allegedly used the name of the young girl’s father to get close to her. And he is a level 3 sex offender.
New York police have accused Jeffrey D. Smith of signing a false name and entering an elementary school. Smith was convicted of sexual crimes against a minor in July, 2000. He was incarcerated until February, 2009 and scheduled to be on parole until 2014.
As a registered sex offender, Smith is not allowed to enter school grounds. He is likely to be charged with a violation of parole and falsifying a legal document. This could send him back to prison for several more years.
For now, Smith is being held in Ontario County Jail. He was denied bail, and will remain in custody until his court date. So far there have been no comments from the family of the 9-year-old.
Sgt. Kaiden said that he has no reason to believe Smith sexually abused the young girl. The case, however, is still under investigation.
We are grateful for the fast-thinking individual who noticed something wasn’t right at Canandaigua Primary School. Their efforts led to the arrest of a level 3 sex offender who now stands accused of forging a signature to visit a minor.
