About Las Vegas

A European explorer named Rafael Rivera was the first known non-native to set foot on a lush valley in Nevada in 1829. He named the area Las Vegas, which means "The Meadow". The first settlement in Las Vegas was a fort built by the Mormons in 1855. The group didn't stay long, however, and the fort was left empty a few years later.

In the late 1800's, precious minerals were found near Las Vegas, which led to the establishment of a large mining industry. People began to move there, and by 1905 it was officially declared to be a city. Nevada was the first state to make casino style gambling, which gave the city even more appeal. The first major Hotel/Casino was built by Tommy Hull in 1941.

The gangster known as "Bugsy" Siegel played an important part in turning Las Vegas into such a well known gambling destination. He established the Flamingo Hotel in 1946, which opened its doors on New Year's Eve. During the 1950's, the gambling industry boomed and many new resorts were built on the Las Vegas strip. Between the entertainers who performed each night, the tourist who went looking for 'lady luck' and the lavish accommodations, Vegas became a prime destination for people all over the world. The famous 'Sin City' nickname didn't hurt business either.

Some people claim that the legalization of casino style gambling in Atlantic City, New Jersey was what led to the construction of the huge resorts in Las Vegas. During the 1980's these mega-casinos and hotels began to appear along the new downtown Vegas strip. Today millions of people visit Las Vegas every year, and enjoy the many wonders the city has to offer.
