About Jacksonville

Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon was the first non-native that is known to enter the Jacksonville area. He named the area Pascua Florida, and claimed the land for Spain. Nearly 50 years later Jean Ribault arrived and declared the area to be under French command. The French established a colony in 1564, but it was destroyed by Spanish troops the following year.

Florida was purchased from Spain for $5 million in 1819, and it officially became a state in 1845. Over the next few decades, Jacksonville grew immensely, but a tremendous fire in 1901 devastated the city. More than 2,300 building were destroyed, and thousands of people lost their homes. The fire began when a cinder from a stove landed in a pile of dry moss and immediately ignited. Flames spread far too rapidly for anyone to control, and the citizens abandoned their homes en masse.

Efforts to rebuild Jacksonville started almost immediately. Between 1901 and 1912, architects from all over the country arrived and helped oversee the construction of 13,000 buildings. The city's railways and waterways allowed for the necessary resources to be brought in quickly, and over time Jacksonville became a hub for the banking and insurance industries. Today the city is a thriving center of industry that is commonly ranked as being one of the 'Hottest Cities In America'
