About Houston

The area now known as Houston was founded by 2 brothers in August of 1836: Augustus C. and John K. Allen. They purchased 6,642 acres of land, and had the site surveyed and mapped out for a small town. By the following year the President of the Republic of Texas, Sam Houston, authorized the incorporation of the Allen brother's town. It became the capital of the Republic between the years of 1837 and 1840.

In 1846 Texas became the 28th state in America. Several years later, during the Civil War, the people of Houston and Harris Counties voted to secede from the Union. Union forces secured the city, and the entire state was closely watched by military forces following the war. Texas was officially brought back into the Union in 1870.

Texas gained nationwide recognition following the discovery of a massive oil field known as Spindletop in 1901. This led to Houston becoming a major producer of oilfield equipment and several refineries opening in the area. Oil continues to be a major facet of the city's economy today.
