About Chicago

Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable is credited as being the first non-native settler in the Chicago area during the 1780's. More settlers soon followed, but it wasn't until 1833 that the town was officially incorporated with a total population of about 200 people. Four years later Chicago was granted a city charter, and the area began to experience a tremendous growth spurt.

By 1871 Chicago had become a large city, but much of it was destroyed in a fire that left nearly 1/3 of the residents without homes. Following the fire, the city faced a then-unprecedented amount of growth for nearly 3 decades. By 1900 the population had reached a staggering 1.7 million and was on its way to becoming one of the most well-known cities in the United States.
