About Atlanta

Georgia was once home to the Creek and Cherokee Native American tribes, but after they assisted the British during the War of 1812, American troops built strong forts to protect them from further attacks. This conflict led to the Creek War, which resulted in the United States purchasing the Georgia territory.

The capital city of Georgia was originally known as Marthasville, but it wasn't long before the name was changed to Atlanta. This new name was chosen because the city was built alongside the Western & Atlantic railway, and it had the distinction of being the last stop on the line.

Atlanta was officially incorporated as a city in 1837, and by 1868 it had become the fifth and final capital of Georgia. The city's large amount of open land and convenient railroad service helped win that distinction. Since then the city has grown tremendously and continued to be a hub of transportation for the entire state.

During the 1960's, Atlanta played a major part in the Civil Rights Movement. The city was home to Martin Luther King who was a key leader for this important cause. Over the last few decades the city has continued to grow and thrive as a center for arts, music and industry.
