About Honolulu

Captain James Cook is credited with being the first non-native person to set foot on Honolulu in 1778. Although his first visit was thought to be a success, he was killed during his next trip after getting into a fight with a group of Hawaiians. Many westerners would soon follow Cook's lead, and arrive in Hawaii during a time of major battles for control over the land. King Kamehameha the Great led his troops in a very successful effort to gain control over all of the territory of Hawaii.

In 1973 Captain William Brown landed in his ship in the Honolulu Bay, with the intent of staying. Others quickly following; Missionaries set up camps on the island and attempted to convert the natives to their form of religion. Over the next few decades, these westerners began to take control of the area and build it up into a prosperous and industrial city. The island would fall under the control of several nations during the next century, and it finally became part of the United States in August of 1959.

One of the most memorable moments in the history of Honolulu was the tragic attack on Pearl Harbor. Early in the morning on December 7, 1941, military bases on the island were bombed by Japanese aircraft. More than 2,000 military personnel and 50 civilians were killed, and the incident was a leading factor in the United States entering World War II.
