Historical Notes:
The name of the city was chosen to honor Christopher Columbus.

The city is home to one of the largest Confederate cemeteries in the northern U.S., many of whom spent time as POW’s at Camp Chase. Columbus also served as a major military base for the Union Army.

Although Columbus was known for having a large variety of industrial sites, it was often referred to as the "Buggy Capital of the World" because the city contained more than 20 buggy factories.

Clarence and Charles Hoover started the “Columbus Experiment” in 1908—the creation of the world’s fist water filtration and softening plant.

The history of Columbus dates back to 1812, but it wasn’t officially incorporated as a town until 1816. The town was planned and built specifically to be the state capital, and it was the third location to enjoy that distinction. By 1824 Columbus had also become the county seat for Franklin County, and the population began to increase dramatically. Within ten years there were enough people living in Columbus to allow it to be designated as a city. The early growth of Columbus is largely attributed to its close proximity to waterways, railroads, interstate roads and other large transportation routes. This central location also led to another major growth spurt for the city during the American Industrial Revolution.
