Historical Notes:
The city of Charlotte featured a hornet's nest as their official city symbol after the British General Charles Cornwallis referred to it as a "hornet's nest of rebellion".

Charlotte was named after King George III's wife, Queen Charlotte Sophia, but many early residents may have regretted that as they became increasingly unhappy with the King's laws.

During the Civil War, North Carolina seceded from the nation in 1851 and Charlotte became the home of the Confederate Naval Yard.

The Thomas Spratt and Thomas Polk families were the first Anglo-Saxon residents in Charlotte, NC. They arrived in 1753, and were soon joined by many other settlers who were seeking religious freedoms and good soil for their farms.

By the 1770's, many of the residents or Charlotte hoped to break free from all ties to Britain, and the city is noted for declaring their independence from the British Crown more than one full year before the creation of The Declaration of Independence.

Charlotte was a leader in the American Gold Rush during the 1800's. People from all over country and even overseas travelled to the area in the hopes of striking it rich after a 12 year old boy found a large chunk of solid gold on the ground. This led to a tremendous increase in the population of the city.

Today Charlotte is the home of many Fortune 500 companies. It is recognized as a major city for banking and other financial related industries. Charlotte is also the primary home of NASCAR and a top destination for tourists from around the globe.
