People have lived on and around the area of land known as Austin Texas for hundreds of years, but it wasn't until the 1830's
that the first permanent settlement was built there. At the time the area was under the control of Mexico, but it wouldn't be long before
the land became a territory of the United States.
Although it was originally called Waterloo, when the area was chosen to become the capital of Republic of Texas in 1839,
a city was built rapidly under the guidance of Stephen F. Austin. Austin, for whom the city was later renamed,
is known as the 'Father of Texas'. He played a key role in colonizing the area before it was a part of the United States.
Texas became a state in 1845, and Austin continued to be the capital city.
The city began to grow rapidly, and by the later 1800's the population was increasing at a tremendous rate.
Throughout the early 1900's the city expanded and became a center for education and technology.
Later still the area gained prominence as a center for country and other forms of music.
Today the city is world-renown for its many venues at which bands play to packed audiences every night of the week.
