Behind the Titanic; People, places, and events
Few tragedies are as firmly fixed in American culture than the tragic sinking of the ocean-liner Titanic. A great many lives were lost and changed forever, among people of a great many nationalities. There have been countless studies, books written, movies made, and stories told about the ship and its fate. Most people are aware that the ship sunk when it struck an iceberg, and that it happened in April of 1912. Aside from the Hollywood movie of the same name, there isn't a lot of public knowledge surrounding the disaster. There exists a whole host of events leading up to and following the sinking that make the story even more amazing.
